You Go Sarah!!

King Kog Sponsored rider- Sarah Murder killed it in LA last weekend at VELO CITY.

Here’s her story on the happenings!

Our team left on Saturday, 8 people and 8 bikes in the van, arriving around 4pm in LA.  First stop was the new Echo Park Cycles run by messengers Ozzie, Doug, and Melissa. They all looked extrememly tired as they had been working on the road as well as in the shop. Doug showed us his new Jacobs frame from Boston.  After a quick bbq at Fergus’ cousin’s house, we met up with Marco, a messenger from Philly and we were off to the party. Chas and Marco placed first out of towners at the alleycat which ended at the party.  All checkpoints were hospital emergency rooms. wtf?
Goldsprints are boring. I embarrassed myself by being near to them and having Jack call me out to do them against Bianca. I had no choice but to get on. I think the setup was from Long Beach. They had a pair of Volume frames. I forgot to tighten the toestraps and my shoe slipped and got caught between crank and frame and I thought i got out of it, but we restarted. I sat up and made faces and spun out. I hate those things. No resistance just feels weird. I guess I wasn’t fully into it. Bianca beat me and everybody accused me of not trying. I actually really suck at goldsprints.  We stayed at Ashira’s hippie house in Silver Lake. I dont know how many cats they have but it seemed like they were all over the place. In the morning I woke up to 3 of them in the same room. Miriam slept outside with a another named Ira. We love cats!
Breakfast at the Brite Spot in Echo Park is expensive and overrated. People call it the “Hipster Denny’s”. Ashira and Miriam had an impromptu sing along with the radio that entertained us as we waited for Amanda to show up. Ashira gave me a large print of Kim “Pink Menace” which was my favorite in her new photo book. Kim looks like a total bad-ass.
There is traffic at all times on all roads. Even the freeway at 10am on Sunday. We made it out to the track. Oh man, I love that place. It’s my favorite one to race on except it’s so damn hot. 250m 28 degrees. Short and fast.
Team Murder in full force. We brought a 10×10 canopy tent(thanks Freight) a bike stand, a floorpump, a cooler of ice,  bags full of chainrings and tools. Everyone was timed for a  flying 200. They paired people in 2s for Match Sprints. It was confusing with the heats by messenger/non-messenger. The ladies were all together, 7 total, myself and Miriam being the only messengers. I set the fastest 200 for the ladies! 7 was an odd number anyway, but I opted out of the Match Sprint to let Miriam handle those chicks on her own for the win, and it wasn’t hard. She beat them all no problem. She’s really improving.
Fergus and I won last year so we weren’t eligible for the tickets to NYC this year. They made him race in the non-messenger category. He wasn’t too happy about it and took his anger to the track and won! 1st place! Evan from Team Murder killed it for the Men’s messenger field. It was his first time on a velodrome!
The Scratch race.  7 ladies 16 laps. Whomever is over the line first at the last lap wins. Although there was a special prize sprint lap that I was unaware of but I won a Continental tire. I get a bit anxious and bored and figured I’d set the pace off the front with Miriam behind me and run those chicks out a bit at a decent pace, pulling Miriam safely with me to work together. When the fastest of the other ladies came up on the side I pulled in front of her and Miriam got in front and stayed in the sprint lane. She picked up a bit so I was able to get back in behind her. It was all under control. We switched to me in front again and chicks were falling off the back. I noticed a gap in between Miriam and I, thinking uh oh  and yelling for her to stay on me and then she pulled off into the infield and puked!! That was around lap 8-9 so I was left with Sasha and a big gap on the rest so I sat on her and let her get worn down until sprinting past one lap
before crossing the line for the win. I scored some Cyclehawk skitching gloves in red! sick!
Miss n Out worked about the same. I was pulling with Miriam and I’m not sure, I shoulda picked up the pace sooner, but I was trying to stay together and I went out in third and she sprinted with Sasha to the end. It was a close sprint to the line with Sasha winning. Miriam and I are pretty good at riding together. I’m cool with riding and being able to look back and see where everyone is while holding the line.  It was really fun riding with a team mate. If I were there on my own, I would have ridden differently. I’m stoked for Miriam and Evan to go race at Kissena! I’m bummed I can’t make it out that weekend and I’ll miss the bbq at King Kog!
